BOOM! Studios on Wednesday released a first look at Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return #1, written by Amy Jo Johnson and Matt Hotson with art by Nico Leon (Ms. Marvel).
The four-part series, conceived by Johnson during the pandemic, tells an alternate-universe story in which the Power Rangers defeated Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd but at great cost, then go their separate ways. We meet the rangers 22 years later, reuniting to mount their losses, when Zack and Billy have news -- Jason, who has since been working as a vigilante, has disappeared. The rangers must work to track him down and fend off a mysterious figure in pursuit.
Since leaving Power Rangers in 1995, Johnson has acted in shows like Felicity and Flashpoint and has written and directed her own films. This is her first comic book.
The BOOM! Direct Reserve campaign on Kickstarter has raised more than $475,000 as of Wednesday night. It closes next Tuesday. The first issue hits shelves in February.
